ASB Advisory Program - Snapshot

Advisory Program

Welcome to the ASB Sukhumvit Campus Advisory Program!

According to the College Community Research Center, “Out of 100 students who enter high school in ninth grade, only 67 will graduate from high school on time, only 38 will enter college directly after high school, and only 26 will still be enrolled in college after one year”.

One of the most crucial components to academic success in university is an adequate program to help the “Academic Middle” in their high school to university transition. This year, ASB officially launched the Advisory Course, this course is focused on providing students from Grade 9 to 12 a holistic and integrated pre-university program.

It is common practice among many schools to have college preparedness programs focused solely on the academic and college knowledge components, but what the ASB Advisory Course aims to accomplish is for our students to not just be academically equipped, but to be well rounded in areas of decision making, emotional intelligence, and responding to challenges in our society. This course comprises four main sub-courses: Career and College Counseling, Social Emotional Learning, Mindfulness, and Global Citizenship.

Career and College Counselling
In this course, we will develop a framework to narrow down the best choice of colleges in the context of your overall life goals.  We will explore and practice college applications and admission requirements, and also simulate the college academic work to prepare and familiarize you in that particular environment.  You will be introduced to BridgeU, the main platform used to prepare, track, and assist students in their university and college applications, as well as explore tertiary education opportunities by getting to know universities and colleges through fairs and visits.

Social Emotional Learning
The Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) model is implemented as a counselling curriculum at The American School of Bangkok.  SEL is the acquisition of skills needed to recognize and manage emotions, develop care and concern for others, make responsible decisions, establish positive relationships, and handle challenging situations effectively. This course ranges from: informative presentations, individual counselling sessions, to get a better grasp of their identity as an individual, and their connection to the community.

Mindfulness
Students will participate in mindfulness sessions to help them gain a clearer understanding of how their thoughts and emotions impact their quality of life. This can help students maintain focus, relieve stress, and have an enhanced ability to respond to their academic and social challenges. It will help students discover themselves, and become more sensitive towards others, leading to healthier and harmonious relationships.

Global Citizenship

Global citizenship as defined by UNESCO (2014) refers to a sense of belonging to a broader community and common humanity. The course is aimed at helping students understand and appreciate the many identities that make up the world, encouraging them to advocate for peace, stability, and cooperation within societies.
